War has begun on
Russian soil and threatens to encompass the globe. Lead an elite infantry team through a series of military missions around the world,
ranging from covert actions to search-and-rescue operations, to all-out firefights in this first-person squad-based action game.
Ghost Recon is "effectively" RSE's follow-up title for sequel-starved Rainbow Six fans. Think of it like how Perfect Dark is a "sequel" to GoldenEye.
Although Ghost Recon is NOT part of the Rainbow Six series, it has been developed by much of the same team that brought us R6/RS and appears to maintain
the one-shot/one-kill squad-based combat genre which R6 introduced.
As R6 tended to be limited to counter-terrorist ops/ indoor CQB (i.e. smaller) environments, Ghost Recon is RSE's effort to expand beyond these limits.
"The Ghosts" are a future ultra-elite U.S. Special Forces unit that can be tasked with a much wider range of operations than Rainbow. It appears that there will be larger outdoor environements and more use of vehicles for support.
May 17, 2001:
On the first day of E3 2001, Ubi Soft issues an official press release
introducing what Ghost Recon is all about:
UBI SOFT AND RED STORM ANNOUNCE TOM CLANCY’S GHOST RECON!
LOS ANGELES, CA (May 17, 2001) E3 Booth #624 - In 1998 Red Storm Entertainment introduced the world to a top-secret
counter-terrorist task force known as Team RAINBOW. In 2001, the world will meet "The Ghosts".
In Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon players are invited to lead this brand-new squad as they focus on covert military
strikes and international peacekeeping missions that do not always go as planned. Conducting extensive missions on
foot, The Ghosts occasionally have assistance from troops in tanks, helicopters and close air support. In many
cases, they work with international military forces and NATO to fight against rising dictators and rebel groups.
Be prepared to scope out the defenses of an enemy, blow up bridges to stop an advance, raid rebel bases, and rescue
an American pilot who gets shot down deep in enemy territory.
The Ghosts are also the squad the Army uses when they need to push their latest and greatest equipment and
weaponry to the limit under fire. The squad has access to the latest weapons such as an M-16 assault rifle with a
grenade launcher mounted underneath. Or, squad members could be responsible for the M-136 Anti-Tank Rocket that
they have to carry on their backs. Firepower this intense would knock a normal soldier off his feet in a second.
For The Ghosts, it’s just another day, just another job.
Featuring brand new game and 3-D engines, Ghost Recon marks Red Storm’s return to the ‘Squad based tactical
shooter’ genre for the first time since 1999’s Tom Clancy’s Rogue Spear.
"We have a new engine, totally new characters, a new storyline, a new way of controlling the team," commented
Red Storm's Chief Game Designer Brian Upton. "We think that even the most battle-hardened Rainbow Six veteran is
going to be excited by where Ghost Recon is taking the tactical shooter genre."
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon will be available from Ubi Soft® Entertainment on PC CD-ROM in Q4 2001.
April 26, 2001:
Ubi Soft issues a press release that
officially confirms the existence of Ghost Recon and that it will be displayed at E3.
April 4, 2001:
The May 2001 issue of GamePro magazine breaks the news that Red Storm's
Xbox title is called "Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon" and publishes the first screenshots of the game.
July 18, 2000:
A report indicates
that Red Storm is the first third-party developer to receive one of the Xbox SDKs (Software Development Kits). This is the first
indication that one of RSE's next major titles will appear on the Xbox console.
It appears that the setting of the levels will
occur in Europe. Levels will include both wide-open countryside and urban areas.
The game engine for Ghost Recon is totally new.
Dedicated servers will be implemented.
Up to 36 people will be supported in multiplayer.
There are indications that PC and Xbox players will be able to play Ghost Recon together online.
